members answer questions that the NPSD and they themselves receive on a regular basis.

As always, NPSD organized several opportunities for community members to learn about district happenings. The Community Conversations with the Superintendent continued and new offerings were added such as Budget Input meetings and an online chat regarding the budget.

Energy Management

NPSD is committed to using an Energy Management program with the goal to reduce its consumption of energy and to reduce budgets. The energy management program is modeled and benchmarked utilizing the ENERGY STAR® program provided by the Federal Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Since the inception of the Energy Management Program with the hiring of an energy manager in the fall of 2010, NPSD has reduced its energy consumption by approxi- mately 20%. With the ongoing Energy Management

Spotlighting Success: Pennfield Middle School Leads the Way in Reducing Energy Consumption

Pennfield Middle School Facility Supervisor Tobe Hilbert and the entire facilities staff at the school are leaders in finding creative ways to reduce consumption and costs associated with energy use such as altering the HVAC system and adjusting building and parking lot lighting.

Hilbert and crew helped to save $22,658.20 in energy costs in 2009-2010 over the previous year and an additional $19,307.30 in energy costs in 2010-2011. In addition, Pennfield has the lowest per-square-foot cost for energy of all of the NPSD buildings, though it is one of the largest. In being energy efficient, the school achieved the prestigious Energy Star label, in- creasing from a score of 44 in 2007 to a score of 94 in 2011.

“It takes many hands to accomplish what we have done at Pennfield– it takes an entire team,” explained Hilbert. “Kevin Hepner, Mike Oxenford and the entire Pennfield custodial staff have the same attitude and vision of this effort and all work equally as hard throughout the day and night.”

Hilbert explained that the Pennfield facilities staff members meet daily to review current projects and discuss what can be done to continue their success.

“Our principal supports us 100 percent, as does everyone at Pennfield, students and families included,” added Hilbert.

Program now coupled with the new Green Schools Program, a partnership with The Alliance to Save Energy, the potential energy conservation could be significantly more.
