WANT TO SWIM THE CHANNEL NEXT SUMMER? Signing up for a Channel swim usually means booking a pilot and his boat two-to-three years in advance, but there is a way to secure a swim next summer.
Aspire, a national charity supporting people with spinal-cord injuries, has fi ve boats booked for both 2012 and 2013 and is currently recruiting swimmers to fi ll them. Competition for places will be stiff . If you’re keen, Aspire want to
know whether your swimming is up to scratch and that you have the potential to raise funds for the charity. If selected, you will be expected to swim with a team of six under usual Channel swimming rules: i.e. no wetsuits and following a strict one-hour rotation throughout. In addition, you may need to obtain a medical as well as completing the usual administrative and registration tasks. Cold-water training starts in early May in Dover Harbour under the watchful eye of Freda Streeter and the beach crew. You will need to complete a two-hour qualifying swim in 15˚C water. If you want to join one of next year’s teams then email Andrew on
andrew.ogierman@aspire.org.uk. The next assessment day is 12 November 2011.
