Dollywood unleashes Wild Eagle
Dolly Parton’s Tennessee theme park is about to unleash the largest single capital investment in its 26-year history. The $20 million (€14m) Wild Eagle will be the first Wing coaster from Bolliger & Mabillard in the US. The coaster’s innovative floorless design positions riders in pairs on the “wings” either side of the track with nothing but
air above and below them. Perched on the park’s highest peak, Wild Eagle will rise 210ft (64m) into the sky. Taking off from the Wilderness Pass area, riders will experience the sensation of flight as the coaster’s massive track swoops and soars along a journey that measures 3,127ft (953 metres). The ride will last nearly two-and-a-half minutes, reaching a top speed of 61mph (98 km/h). After the 135ft (41m) first drop, riders will experience four inversions including a giant loop, a “zero-G” roll and a giant flat spin. Each coaster train consists of 14 twin seats, or seven rows, providing a 28 passenger capacity. Each vehicle features a bald eagle with broad wings. Dollywood is home to the American Eagle Foundation’s (AEF) headquarters and Eagle Mountain Sanctuary aviary.
Air Race Portugal
Pictured here is the second Air Race from Zamperla, now in operation at AquaShow Park on the Algarve in Portugal. Since manufacturing this and the original for Coney Island Luna Park in New York, Zamperla has sold a further two Air Race rides, one for Zhang Jiangang Jiyanghu Park in China and the other for a secretive client in North Korea.
Mäch Tower
Busch Gardens’ Mäch Tower finally opened on August 19, ending months of anticipation from guests eager to ride the parks’ newest and tallest thrill attraction. “During the manufacturer’s initial testing, some mechanical issues were discovered that caused the delay,” repports park president Carl Lum. “We’re pleased our guests will be able to ride Mäch Tower before the summer comes to a close.” From Moser Rides, Mäch Tower offers incredible views as
its 30-seat rotating carriage climbs nearly 240ft (73m) above the park’s Oktoberfest village. Once riders get a few seconds to take in the view, the carriage plummets at breathtaking speed straight down the massive Maypole-
themed tower attraction. Mäch Tower anchors a newly rejuvenated Oktoberfest village featuring new game areas, performance spaces and a pretzel bakery.
Canobie Lake Untamed
Untamed, a Compact Euro-Fighter by Gerstlauer, has opened at Canobie Lake Park, Salem, New Hampshire. The only rollercoaster of its kind in New England is now one of four in the United States. The coaster’s cars, which hold eight passengers each, feature a Grizzly bear on the front The sta- tion and surrounding area are themed in “Adirondack” style with 64 carved bears throughout the loading area. A vertical lift coaster, Untamed features an initial climb that takes riders 72ft into the air. From there, they plummet into a 97º drop before they zoom through a series of loops, twists and zero-gravity rolls over 1,184ft of track.
