LIKE TO ILLUSTRATE THE VALUE OF DIVERSITY BY WAY OF A BAR GAME. Bar trivia—or simply trivia—is the epitome of randomness. Questions can come from anywhere. It does absolutely no good to show up to trivia games with the same four people you grew up with, your classmates and friends. T e best way to be prepared for trivia is to make sure
your partners are from diverse backgrounds. A multilin- gual historian with an aptitude for geography, a gossipy socialite, an opera and art history buff , a nerdy sports fanatic, and an art-school DJ for the audio category, makes the perfect team, depending on the bar. Of course you always go out with your classmates
and friends, so you lose. But when you are in charge of a Fortune 500 company you can be faced with any problem, or question, no matter how random, at any time. T at’s why diversity of opinion is important. No one appreciates that idea more than MCCA’s
new President and CEO Joe West. We are excited to have him as our new team captain. You can read about Joe’s life and career in our Diversity News section. T e six Fortune 1000 general counsel profi led in this
issue share how they rose to top risk manager for their respective companies. MCCA’s fi rst-ever duel survey of women and minority general counsel refl ects the status of diversity at the highest levels of American business. We also explore why the corporate boards are often
the least diverse aspect of companies, and how that can be improved. We hear from the general counsel from one of the
most diverse universities in the country, American U’s Mary Kennard, and Sarah Deer, an infl uential Native American attorney, shares her passion for women’s issues and tribal aff airs.

D&B profi les MuBANY, the Muslim Bar Association of New York. T e fi ve-year-old organization is dedi- cated to educating the legal community and general public about the signifi cant obstacles facing the American Muslim populace. I hope this magazine provides a variety of interest-
ing articles for our readers. Who knows what that next question might be?
