DESPITE DECLINING SALES IN THE U.S. LAST YEAR, WALMART REMAINED ON TOP OF THE FORTUNE 500, A POSITION IT HAS CLAIMED FAR MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IN RECENT YEARS. Companies have boosted productivity eliminating employee redundancy and cutting pay and benefi ts for remaining employees, but analysts believe continued growth will have to come from a strategy that includes increased hiring.
