or Autumn/Winter 12/13, Mpdclick welcome the theme of ‘Nations Rising’ which considers a season of cultural remix, technological development and

sustainable luxury set to influence footwear designs for the season. As Western brands and retailers scramble for new opportunities within the world’s fastest rising nations, we embrace the new Silk Road and the trading of commodities such as design, innovation and sustainable initiatives. Firstly, in ‘Myriad’, we recognize the demand for

luxury without compromising eco-credentials and top quality manufacturing, combining these values with a strong sense of Arabic tradition while envisioning the regions contemporary future. For women’s ranges, statement wedge shoe boots, t-bar heels and re-worked courts provide

intensified with exotic accents of amethyst, deep magenta, fresh turquoise and rustic gold. In ‘Remix’, the growing relationship between

Africa and China ignites an energetic blend of inspirations combining the decorative, bold visuals and tribal designs integral to African design with the delicate and refined lines of Chinese style. A distinct cut ‘n’ paste aesthetic is a clear focus

for ‘Remix’ footwear utilising fabric and print contrasts, hybrid styles and unexpected proportion play. Statement styles are key; even flat loafers are given an animal print overhaul combined with brightly coloured patent piping. Classic courts are brought up-to-date with subtle fur trim for career ranges while block colour and print inserts contribute a contemporary, deconstructed element to the trend.

surveillance robots and South Korea’s K-Pop youth culture within the region provides key aesthetic inspiration. A definitive moulded look governs footwear

styles in soft leather with patent and matte finishes juxtaposed against each other. Pull-on ankle boots, slip-on flats and wedged shoe boots are enveloped with cabling, straps, ribbing and reinforced padding, channelling the protective aspect of the trend. Y-3’s black wedge boots from the Autumn/Winter 11/12 collection is a great streetwear interpretation. Wedged designs, whether shoe boot, sandal or boot are essential enhancements of the hi-tech element, as are platform bases. For men, biker boots are given a contemporary twist with core strapping and Perspex buckles while smart lace-ups see sharp sole colour contrasts and unexpected zip inserts.

the basis for which fabric and decoration take centre stage. Fabrics sit in a luxe range of suedes, satins, buttersoft leather and reptile skins with tone-on-tone textural detail being key. Jewel embellishment, intricate bead work and laser-cut patterns mimic the hypnotizing geometrics of Middle-Eastern design. Dries Van Noten’s Autumn/Winter 11/12 and John Richmond’s Spring/Summer 11 footwear designs provide key reference points. For men, both the refined and rugged are embraced; the lavishness of Arabia is echoed through woven suede loafers, decorative Chelsea boots and desert boots while rugged utility boots, woven moccasins and weathered trainers reflect an alternative desert inspired direction. Neutral, classic shades of fresh white, camel and khaki are enriched and

For men’s ranges, subtle prints and muted colour contrasts are a key focus evolving classic shapes. A woven pattern or slick reptile skin transforms traditional leather boots while leather trainer uppers are combined with a rigid sole for an intriguing look that fits well into the commercial landscape. Frankie Morello’s hybrid design featured within his Autumn/Winter 11/12 collection is an valuable reference point. Traditional brogues and loafers are upgraded with unexpected reptile skin inserts and quirky beaded tassels. ‘Synthesise’ represents the rapidly

accelerating advances of sustainable technology with a particular focus on South Korea which has cemented its place as leaders in the mobile, retail and communication sectors. Seoul’s industrial skyscrapers, the development of

Hi-tops are taken out of retro domain and brought into contemporary, almost futuristic territory, led by an example from Stunny Sneakers Autumn/Winter 11/12 range. Quilting stands out as a significant design feature, commercially updating classic shapes while establishing the K-Pop influence. Muted tones of shale grey and latex black are enlivened with saccharine sweet accents of pale glass blue, zingy apricot and acetate viola, forming this highly synthetic palette.
