MODA REVIEW

Moda Footwear – August 14 - 16 2011 Brands and buyers report optimistic mood at Moda

Exhibitors and visitors at Moda, the UK’s largest trade fashion exhibition, reported an optimistic mood across the halls at this season’s event, which took place on 14-16 August at the NEC Birmingham.

A

lthough visitor numbers were not released for the the three-day event, held later than usual, during the third week of August, the organisers did confirm that attendance was

down by 3% over August last year. Having attended the show, I can report that following a lively start to the show on Sunday, visitor numbers appeared to dwindle on Monday and Tuesday. Despite the lower footfall however, many footwear exhibitors reported a busy and successful show and were clearly placing orders from a large number existing and new buyers.

What the exhibitors told

Footwear Today Magazine: Menbur and Paco Mena reported a fantastic

Moda Show. “The collection was strong and the response was great. We feel like we have travelled back to 4 years ago and the orders are of a similar size and quantity. Each day at Moda our orders climbed, Sunday was very good, Monday better and we ended with a fantastic Tuesday that beat the daily figures of the other two days! Zoe and Bryan Willows, UK agents, told Footwear Today. Zoe added: “We had a lot of returning

customers and several new accounts. We also have many leads to follow up as we were so busy at times that customers came back several times before we were free to take an order. Our return to Pure the previous weekend had been strong and we hoped to match the figures there. We are pleased to say that we doubled them and only hope now that the season continues as strongly. We know that footfall was down, but are realistic in the fact that there are fewer retailers out there, but the survivors now seem ready to order and have taken the time over the three previous years to plan their buying in a more systematic way.“

18 • FOOTWEAR TODAY • SEPTEMBER 2011 “After having a record breaking show with Vanilla

Moon, Sachelle and Olga Berg Handbags at the Pure show the previous week, we were not expecting to follow this with the same results at Moda, but on reflection of the 3 day show, we were extremely happy with excellent orders from existing and new customers on all brands and had our best Moda ever. It is becoming very apparent as an agency we are offering great commercial ranges from Vanilla Moon shoes and Olga Berg handbags and the cream on the cake to speak are fantastic dress, shoes and bags from the Spanish factory Sachelle.” Chris Dagless, UK footwear agent

“Despite the challenging trading conditions

retailers have experienced over the last few weeks, all the brands within Josef Seibel Group found the key multiple and independent buyers feeling positive about the forthcoming season, along with new collections for 2012. Footfall for our brands continued to be buoyant throughout the first two days of the show although we felt the show seemed quieter than usual on the Tuesday”. Jennie Petchey, Brand Development Manager Josef Seibel UK Ltd.

“For Mephisto, it was a very useful exercise, we

have opened accounts with a considerable number of new customers and some returning ones too. There is no doubt that tough trading in recent months affected the attendance- we definitely had fewer visitors than at the corresponding show last year. However, for Mephisto, the positives clearly outweighed the negatives and we had a terrific reaction to the new ladies sandal ranges and the new men’s formal shoes as well as the traditional best sellers. ”Andrew King, UK agent, Mephisto.

“What this season’s Moda show lacked in

quantity it more than made up for with the quality as we saw some great accounts, both new and established, leading to some strong orders.” Peter Knight – Base London Brand and

Account Development Executive “Sunday & Monday were two great days and

both well attended, Tuesday very quiet. New independent stores opening with us and several new account enquiries to follow up on. Overall impression from the retailers was one of slightly more upbeat enthusiasm than anticipated. The SS12 Van Dal collection broke new ground with the expansion of their "Simple Comfort" group and new developments on the ever popular wedges. Star performers for the season look like being El Nido and Bayonne. “T Gordon McF

ony Linford and adyen, The Florida Group “Moda again has met our expectations with a

busy three days and a larger than average number of new accounts opened. As to orders, colourful striped socks are still of massive interest, the Executive range and the Peter Jones range particularly. Heading into winter, our technical socks, Commando and Commando II have also been a bestseller.“Marion Bauer Marketing Manager
