FROM THE EDITOR Footwear Awards
I
am delighted to be able to relate some exciting news about next year’s Footwear Awards. After consulting at great length with industry leaders, including IFRA, the BFA and The Society of Shoe Fitters, it has been decided that Datateam Business Media Ltd., will be hosting the Footwear Awards – an annual event for the industry, run by the industry. With the four cornerstones of the Footwear sector working in unison,
the BFA, representing the footwear brands, IFRA representing the independent retailer, SSF representing Shoe Fitting and the Trade Press providing media coverage, the event looks set to become a widely publicised and well-attended event – the first which sees all the trade associations working together as one to reward their peers. The event promises to award high achieving brands and retailers, whilst also offering the industry a valuable networking opportunity. The next Annual Footwear Awards will be held on 19th February at the
Forest of Arden Hotel, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club, which completed a stunning £5m conversion in 2009. Set in the heart of the Midlands amidst the rural Warwickshire countryside, the hotel is located only 4 miles from Birmingham NEC. Transport will be provided to the venue from the NEC, and rooms will be available at concessionary rates. Datateam Business Media Ltd., welcome feedback from the footwear
trade on the proposed Footwear Award categories. You can find out more about these award categories, how voting will be conducted and details of sponsorship packages on page 14 of this edition. Meanwhile, The Society of Shoe Fitters is extremely concerned at the
increased number of children being referred to Podiatrists and G.P.’s. Retailers have reported seeing far more serious foot health problems than ever before i.e. Hallux Valgus, Ankle Valgus, heel bumps and Plantar Fasciitis etc. in children, and are tentatively referring children for treatment. Society member Professor Wesley Vernon OBE has suggested that
shops may like to record the problems they are seeing to allow the SSF to present this to government. They are asking all shoe shops to monitor very simply what they see this month during the busy back-to-school period. A form can be downloaded from the SSF website. "It is time shops stood together to stress the importance of fitting - regardless of being SSF qualified or not" says Laura West, Secretary of the SSF. To be a part of this survey go to
www.shoefittersuk.org. Download the form and return it to the SSF office by the end of September. Also, in this edition, we talk to Richard Kottler, Chief Executive of the
British Footwear Association. There is no doubt that there is a genuine resurgence of interest in buying products carrying a Made in Britain label. This demand is emerging both from domestic and more particularly from overseas sources. In the case of the home market, the consumer is being bombarded with the “advantages” of buying UK produced goods and there is a definite glow of Britishness around - the Royal Wedding, the upcoming Olympics, the feeling that other countries are having a worse time than us - despite the underlying financial pessimism. But, it is the export market that is the main driver here. Read the full
