SHORT BREAKS selling & HOLIDAYS

thisissue

It was, of course, a tough summer in more ways than one. The economy remained fl at, there were travel company failures –

most obviously Turkey specialist Holidays 4U, which also traded as Aegean Flights – and the weather was mostly a damp squib.

On those rare occasions when the sun did have its hat on it was invariably straight back on the coat hook the following day. But the fl ip side of our non-summer should be a pent-up demand for some consistent sunshine – which is why our Winter Sun feature in this issue is particularly timely. The Canary Islands is one destination that is looking forward to a bumper autumn and winter, in part the benefi ciary of many visitors choosing to give North Africa a miss this year.

All the Canaries enjoyed a rise in numbers in

the fi rst half of the year – with Lanzarote alone up 20 per cent – and advance bookings are also looking good. Yet, for intrepid travellers, Egypt and Jordan may never again be better value for your clients. One operator, Discover Egypt has savings of up to £750pp on holidays for both countries in September and October.

Travel Agents Choice Awards Elsewhere in this issue, we invite all agents to cast their votes in our 2011 Travel Agents Choice Awards – we call them the TACAs – and in the process put themselves in the frame to win one of 65 great prizes. For full details, see page 6-7 and vote online at www.sellinglonghaul.com
