"I fi rst went to Croatia when it was still part of Yugoslavia, at the start of the 1990s. I was eight and it was my fi rst exciting taste of going ‘abroad’. I now work in travel and for many years I hung on to those vivid childhood memories: of the warm terracotta roofs that characterised every town; the incredibly clear sea; and the friendly people we met, including George, a holiday-maker from from Sarajevo. I often wonder what happened to George during the Balkan War. Back then, Croatia seemed very poor

to me. When my mother and I went to buy some bread we were served by a widow, who stooped towards us, swathed in black. In the window was a single loaf, covered by a cloth to keep the fl ies off it. The only other produce was a pat of oily butter and some dusty bottles of pop.

A full programme of social events and excursions will run alongside the talks. www.thetravelconvention.com

Fast forward to this July and, as a I approached the island of Hvar I felt a tingle of recognition at the orange- roofed houses. But as we stepped onto the familiar smooth fl agstones, that’s where the similarities ended. Today Hvar Town is the St. Tropez of the Balkans; an upper-class Ibiza, where the rich and beautiful come to mingle, pulling up on shiny super yachts bigger than ferries. By day, the pebbled beaches are packed nose-to-tail with lithe brown bodies; by night, the bars are teeming and the narrow streets packed with promenading couples, glamorous ladies leading pampered pooches and groups of young ‘yachties’ sipping mojitos."
