Team became the first team in its age group to advance to the semifinal round of the FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship. In the first round, the Americans defeated Bulgaria and Japan around a loss to host Brazil to advance into the top eight second round. Team USA opened the second round Pool E with victories overs Iran and Spain to earn a spot into the gold-medal semifinal round despite a five-set loss to eventual champion Russia to conclude the second round. In the semifinals, the U.S. Men’s Junior
Team won the first set against Argentina before losing a hard-fought 28-26 second set to even the match. Argentina captured the next two sets to earn a berth in the gold-medal match and pushing the Americans into the bronze-medal match with a podium finish still within reach. However, Serbia dealt the U.S. a four-set loss in the third-place match, dashing the hopes of American players flying home with a medal around their necks.

The U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team be- gan the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ Youth World Championship Turkey 2011 with a sweep of NORCECA rival Puerto Rico before falling to Serbia and China to close out the first round. With its three points and 1-2 record, the Americans dropped to the 9-16 clas- sification second round Pool G. Team USA rebounded in the second round with sweeps over Slovakia, Thailand and Egypt to win Pool G.
In the 9-12 classification semifinals, the
U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team did not lose a single set in the five matches played. The squad defeated Slovakia, Thailand and Egypt in the second round to reach the 9-12 classi- fication semifinals. The U.S. topped Mexico, followed by Slovakia again in the ninth-place match.
In retrospect, Team USA’s first-round pool included both the silver and bronze medal teams in China and Serbia, creating the hardest pool to simply reach the top eight second round. For more information on the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ Youth World championship Turkey 2011, visit http://
