host Peru claimed a fi ve-set win over Team USA in front of a sellout crowd. The U.S. fi nished second in Pool E despite the back-to-back losses to advance to the gold-medal semifi nals and faced top-ranked and undefeated Brazil. Just by reaching the semifi nals, the Ameri- cans assured at least tying their best-ever fi nish in the event but were looking for more – the fi rst medal for USA Volleyball at a youth or junior World Championships. After losing the fi rst two sets to power- house Brazil, the Americans battled back to force a tiebreaker.
Down 14-12 in the fi fth set, the U.S. saved two match points before Brazil collected the 16-14 victory. In the bronze-medal match, the U.S. lost its shot at a medal with a four-set loss to China. Team USA libero Natalie Hagglund was selected the Best Libero of the FIVB Vol- leyball Women’s Junior World Champion- ship Peru 2011. She earned the honors after posting a 56.99 success percent on 365 total attempts. Hagglund averaged 4.90 digs per set, the second-highest total in the tournament
