VIEWPOINT
The value of teamwork I
BY JOHN MESENBRINK, EDITOR
just returned from a fishing trip on Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada. It was good to get away for a while. But with fishing comes a
lot of free time. And with free time comes a lot of thinking. So I started thinking of how the work involved in setting up this trip in particular could be analogous to the plumbing industry. Now last year’s trip (2010) was spent at a

lodge that featured the “American Plan.” This basically meant that all meals were provided, beds were made and the daily housekeeping performed. For this year’s trip, however, everyone relied on the support of the entire group to help cook the meals, take out the trash, clean the fish, etc. And even while you were out on the boat, each person relied on the person fishing across from him to control the motor, net the big one, and in my case, dislodge the hook stuck in my thumb. When it comes to the industry as a whole, my
fishing analogy works. On the larger scale, we can all work together to net much bigger industry-

wide problems such as by working on the recruitment of youth, scald prevention, etc. On a company-wide scale you need to work together by working with your local wholesalers, help your customers find an economical and energy efficient solution to their plumbing or heating dilemma — value engineering, for example. On an individual basis, the company needs to
rely on strong customer service to obtain, service and maintain that customer for future callbacks or rely on a strong project manager and estimator to go into a project and secure the bid. You need tight coordination with the project engineer and general contractor. From accounting to customer service to strong
project management, all facets of a company play a huge part in the success of the business. As an industry, we all need to rely on each
other to see the industry grow and maintain its health. I’d love to hear what you caught this year! “Bert, get the net. This one’s pretty big!” l
