ParkWord August 2011

We have news this month of major new theme park resorts planned in Russia (see page 8) and Poland (page 20). Each claim to be the first of their kind in Eastern Europe, though that honour will go to Adventure World Warsaw if phase one opens as schedhuled in 2014. What is surprising, perhaps, is that no theme parks (as opposed to amusement parks) yet exist in either of these two countries, although Gennady Moshkovich, the driving force behind Magic World Russia, believes he knows why nothing has yet materialised near Moscow. One reason is that previous developers looked at unsuitable sites in the centre of this notoriously traffic-congested city. “Keep in mind also that for many years Russia hasn’t been ready for a world-class theme park project and personal income of the average Russian wasn’t as strong as it is now,” adds Moshkovich. “Today most Russians are very well educated, experienced, talented and well travelled. They know quality when they see it.”

Then there is the political situation and business environment: “Great progress has been made in the last 10 years. New Russian leadership has created many investment opportunities for Russian and non-Russian companies alike. Despite the extraordinary investment that Russia has been experiencing by the private and government sector, some people believe that you couldn’t do anything without connections.” Good luck to Moshkovich and the Canadian industry experts he’s assembled to help him realise his “Magical” dream, and also to Peter Jan Mulder and the Dutch companies working with him on his “Adventure” in Warsaw. Both are going for it big style, attempting to build not just a single theme park, but multi-park resorts with hotels and other facilities open from the very beginning. Clearly they believe the market is there, let’s hope they are right. We’ll watch with interest over the years to come.
