ALMA MATTERS Class notes School of Nursing reunion


Led by Dean’s Council Member Mary Jane Suave and Alumni Board Mem- ber Peggy Webb, the School of Nursing Class of 1961 gathered in Chicago the weekend of June 17-19 to celebrate 50 years as Loyola alumni. More than 25 members of this year’s golden anniversary class traveled from around the country to take part in the event. On Saturday, those in atten- dance had lunch at the Information Commons on the Lake Shore Campus with Dean Vicki Keough, who also treated the group to a tour of campus.

Football Foundation in December 2010. Starkey was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as the 16th member in the broad- caster category, in recognition of 36 years of football play-by-play for the University of California.


Jose S. Arcilla, S.J. (MA ’65), obtained a PhD in philosophy and letters from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1979. Since then, he has been teach- ing undergraduate and graduate courses in history and continuing his research in Madrid. He has published a number of books. One of them, 150 The Ateneo Way, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Ateneo de Manila Univer- sity, received two awards. He also wrote Sueldo and Bayad, a well-received collection of essays on Philippine colonial society, and currently writes a weekly column in a Manila daily, Business World.


Richard A. Devine (BA ’65) was elected chairman of the Maryville Academy board.


1960s


Mary Patricia Carroll (BS ’61, MSW ’65) was named to Who’s Who of American Women 2010-2011.


Tom Slone (BS ’62) is business devel- opment manager for Tacit Solutions LLC, a California-based manage- ment consulting firm focused on supporting businesses involved in the aerospace, medical, and military market spaces, among others.


Kathleen M. Richards (Rome ’62, BS ’63) has two items of good news: in November 2010, her second great- grandson was born, Connor Matthew Quarles, to grandson Ray and his


wife, Rachel. She also celebrated her 35th anniversary of working for WFMT radio in February 2011.


Miles L. Patterson (BS ’64) wrote More than Words: The Power of Nonverbal Communication. There are also editions in Spanish, Catalan, and Polish, and another planned in Japanese. He is the author/editor of three other books on nonverbal communication, and the author of more than 80 scholarly articles on the topic. He has been a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis since 1969 and was the 2009 recipient of the University of Missouri President’s Award for Research and Creativity.


Joseph K. Starkey (BBA ’64, MSIR ’65) received the Chris Schenkel Award for excellence in broadcasting college football from the National

Richard T. Phelan (BBA ’67) was recognized on the “America’s Top 1,000 Advisors: State-by-State” list in the February 21, 2011, issue of Barron’s magazine.


Alderwoman Ginger Rugai (BS ’67, MA ’01) was honored during the Ann F. Baum Women and Lead- ership Speaker Series on March 24 at Loyola’s Mundelein Auditorium with fellow Alderwoman Mary Ann Smith (MUND ’85), and they discussed their experiences as al- derwomen working with the Daley administration.


Paul Tomich (BS ’69, MD ’73) received the first-ever District VI Lifetime Achievement award from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Tomich is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.


1970s


McKinley Dillingham (MEd ’70) retired as president and owner of Dillingham Associates, a Chicago- based market research firm he founded in 1973.


Edward M. Kaye (BS ’71, MD ’75), formerly the group vice president of clinical development at Genzyme Corporation, is now senior vice presi- dent and chief medical officer of AVI BioPharma, Inc.


The Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson (MEd ’71, PhD ’81), received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the Uni- versity of Notre Dame at the school’s 166th commencement ceremony on May 22, 2011. A Notre Dame press release notes: “As past vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has promoted Catholic education by partnering with Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Educa- tion to establish three ACE Academy schools in the Diocese of Tucson.”


Nancy C. Stachnik (MUND ’71, MUND ’78) received the 2011 Charity and Truth Award at the annual Resur- rection College Prep High School dinner auction. The award is given to alumni of Resurrection High School who “demonstrate ongoing dedica- tion and service through their com- mitment of time, talent, or treasure.”


Dale A. Bespalec, PhD (BA ’73, MA ’77), is dean of the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology. Bespalec has been on the faculty there since 1985.


Michael Hess (BS ’73) co-authored an article on quantitative methods in advertising research for the 50th anniversary issue of the Journal of Advertising Research, published in March 2011. He has contributed about 150 publications to the mar- keting/advertising field.
