It’s when children start believing that you are not trapped in a cycle of poverty and hopelessness, that you can get out of it.’

Meyer, who always wanted to be a runner, says she also valued education even though her choice of university – Stellenbosch – was influenced by the Maties’ prowess in athletics. ‘My drive all along was to be the fastest runner in the world.’

I have always been inspired by little steps of achievement. My reference was not that I always had to be first to be successful.’

I love the freedom, the fact that I could explore when I run … there were so many things that I enjoyed about running. It was a big passion of mine since I was young so it didn’t feel like being in an army, being punished. If you want to be successful in anything you have to stay close to your passions because then work feels like play.’
