OUR NEW HEIGHTS:

• After five years of planning, Mordecai Children’s Garden welcomed more than 41,000 visitors of all ages in a few short months of late summer and fall. Over 170 member families visited more than 10 times: one member family visited 43 times.

• Denver Botanic Gardens expanded class and program offerings for adults, reaching an increased audience of over 7,000 registrants.

• Education programs reached more than 23,000 children in total, providing hands-on experiences, standards-based science lessons and the marvels of the plant world.

• The number of volunteer-led tours at York Street doubled in 2010, and the number of adults taking tours increased by 240%. The Moore in the Gardens tours were particularly popular, with both drop-in weekend attendance and group-requested tours exceeding similar exhibits in the recent past.

• More than 536 school programs served approximately 20,000 school children. Of those, 6,686 children were served by the Gardens’ In Full Bloom scholarship program.

• The Feast in the Garden, our 2010 Bonfils-Stanton series exploring edible landscapes and regional food traditions, drew huge crowds – over 1,000 registrants - to lectures, tours and workshops.

2010 Denver Botanic Gardens Annual Report

• The Gardens worked with 18 classrooms in six low-income schools through the G.R.O.W (Growing Respect by Observing our World) Collaborative, an integrated effort between the Children’s Museum of Denver, the Butterfly Pavilion and Denver Botanic Gardens. G.R.O.W. is a multifaceted program that includes comprehensive teacher professional development and curriculum support, literacy and science materials, in-class educational programming and field trips in alignment with the Denver Public Schools and Adams 12 Five Star School District’s life science curriculum.

• Over 900 registrants attended 52 Rocky Mountain Gardening Certificate Program classes, learning about wise uses and beneficial practices suited to our conditions here on the Front Range.

• The Gardens presented 86 children’s classes and camps, including: Seedlings (hands- on explorations for 3-5 year-olds), Garden Camps and mini-camps (6-12 year-olds), and a Full Moon Family Night for all ages.

• Over 250 registrants enjoyed Mount Goliath Wildflower Hikes, descending the Walter M. Pesman trail with Gardens-trained guides finding, teaching and appreciating Colorado’s native mountain flora.
