Look west of Denver and you’ll see peaks for hikers to traverse or climbers to scale. But the challenge isn’t necessarily in heading up; more often, it’s in leaving your current peak to experience something new. It’s true whether you’re a schoolchild realizing that plants are actually alive, a gardener planning to transplant beloved flowers, a builder considering an investment in a green roof, a cook looking for healthier recipes, a parent searching for experiences to share with a child, or a teenager perplexed and bewildered by a botanist’s insistence peanuts are seeds and raw ones can grow into plants. It can be hard to experiment, to take risks or admit your current ideas are wrong, but reaching new peaks can be an unparalleled satisfaction. While we celebrate our own accomplishments in 2010, we recognize our students and learners for their own leaps across challenging valleys.
