It was a year that established a new platform for Denver Botanic Gardens. The first wave of our Master Development Plan was completed and the response exceeded our loftiest expectations. We began 2010 with the arrival of Henry Moore, who was aptly named. Twenty of his works adorned the far reaches of the Gardens, at York Street and at Chatfield. A community largely unfamiliar with his work fell in love with this 20th century genius and his groundbreaking modernist interpretations. Combined with the Gardens’ mid-century modern architecture, it was a match made in heaven.

The crowds began to build. Records were smashed. Then came the opening of the Mordecai Children’s Garden, a three-acre paradise for kids. Volunteers scrambled to plant every corner of the Garden, including a one-acre green roof that sits atop the park- ing structure. The Children’s Garden was instantly spectacular and attracted over 10,000 people per month from the onset. Just wait until those plants begin to thrive.

By Labor Day we opened the Greenhouse Complex, with a stunning orchid display and waterfalls in the new Marnie’s Pavilion and rotating displays in the already fabled

Orangery. Behind the scenes are state-of-the-art greenhouses, labs, horticulture offices, the Botanical Illustration classroom, mechanical rooms and storage garages. Believe me, this complex makes the next 50 years of our work possible.

Membership jumped 43 percent. Admissions soared 55 percent.

The best news of all is that this is just the beginning. From 2010 on, the momentum of the Master Development Plan, the adherence to core values, the depth of classes and programming, the sophistication of research and the overall power of plants showcased in sublime horticulture all combine to place Denver Botanic Gardens center stage.

So get ready. The show has just begun.
