Car maker Honda announced it is sending zero waste to landfills from 10 of its 14 manufacturing facilities in North America, including three metalcasting plants. Te company said its engine

component casting facilities in Anna, Ohio, Lincoln, Ala., and Alliston, Ontario, Canada, are reusing virtually all leftover sand from aluminum and ferrous metalcasting operations. In FY2010, the three plants recycled a to- tal of 9,400 tons of sand, which is used as mulch and landscaping material and in concrete products. According to the company, Honda

Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln became the first zero-waste-to-landfill auto plant in North America at the outset of production in 2001, setting off a trend within the company. Waste sent to landfills has been

Adds Space, Ovens Kovatch Castings, Uniontown,

Ohio, has added 16,000 sq. ft. to its facility with the help of a government grant, according to office personnel. Te company said its president, Doug Kovatch, set the cornerstone for the expansion at a private ceremony on June 17. Te new manufacturing space was officially opened with a ribbon cutting event on July 22. Nancy Carter, sales office manager, said the expansion was partially fund- ed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the Ohio Department of Development’s Targeting Energy Efficiency Grant. Te expansion was intended to

make room for two new energy efficient ovens, as well as support equipment. In addition to being more efficient than the company’s previous ovens, the new equipment gives the plant the ability to recycle their heat. Carter said 43 new jobs would be cre- ated through the expansion.
