People round-up Charity boosts its board


The Railway Benefit Fund has made five new appointments. Joining the board of management will be Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail; Bart Schmeink, managing director of Merseyrail; and Deborah Gilshan of pensions administrator RPMI. Montgomery will also chair


the RBF Scottish Management Committee.


Jane English, HR director of Merseyrail; and Janet Goodland, a former director of Network Rail, will be co-opted members of the RBF Benefits Committee.


IRO recruits new CEO, as Daughton retires

The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO) has


appointed a new chief executive officer, following Chris Daughton’s decision to step down at the end of September. Fiona Tordoff, 46, is to


take up the post. A fellow of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, she has been heading up Whitebridge Consultancy, which has Network Rail and National Express Group amongst its clients. Her expertise is in human resources, organisation development and project methodology. Tordoff said: ‘I am very much


looking forward to helping the institution grow and develop, and to serving its members through the membership and academic routes we offer.’ As the IRO’s second CEO,


Fleet manager retires


Work was suspended for a short while at C2C’s East Ham depot on Friday 1 July when managing director Julian Drury made a surprise visit to pay tribute to Tony Smith. The company’s fleet manager was retiring after 36 years in the rail industry, having started as an apprentice at Darnall depot, Sheffield in 1962. Despite taking a few years


out from railways, Drury pointed out that Smith, 65, was respected throughout the industry, especially for the success of the Class 357. Smith replied: ‘It’s all down to


teamwork.’ He was presented with a train-


style nameplate, before confiding to Rail Professional that it was not the end of his daily commute by rail from Doncaster to east London as he had planned to work for himself about three days a week within the industry.


Wilson joins Invensys


Invensys Rail has announced the appointment of Will Wilson to the position of vice president, commercial. He joins the company from Signalling Solutions where he was commercial director.


Daughton, 67, oversaw a period of rapid development and growth


of the


organisation. A former


BR manager, he is to leave as the role becomes full time. He says: ‘I’ve enjoyed the job and it has kept me in touch with people in the industry. ‘It has


been great to


see the organisation grow from an acorn to the mighty oak it is now. ‘I wasn’t involved in founding


the IRO in the late 1990s, but was invited in as chief executive in 2001. I’m very proud of getting the education programme accredited and seeing the first undergraduates enrol on certified courses.’


DB Schenker names new head of HR n


Fiona Guthrie has been appointed as head of human resources by DB Schenker Rail (UK). Guthrie joins the company from


property and construction company Simons, where she was group human resources director. She has also held senior human


resources roles at the facilities company Morrison and the


supermarket Safeway. Guthrie said: ‘DB Schenker


Rail UK is a great place to be. With strong growth projections for rail freight and an increasing focus on environmental issues, there are significant opportunities for our skilled workforce to develop their expertise, enabling modal shift from road to rail to increase.’


Manchester appoints chairs


The Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGMC), a joint committee of the new Greater


Manchester Combined Authority, appointed its chair and vice chairs at its AGM at the end of June. Councillor Andrew Fender


(Manchester) is to chair the TfGMC. Vice chair, and chair


of the Capital Projects & Policy sub-committee, is to be Councillor Roger Jones (Salford), while vice chair and chair of the Bus & TfGM Services sub-committee is Councillor Mark Aldred (Wigan). Vice chair, and chair of the Metrolink & Rail Networks sub- committee, is Councillor Doreen Dickinson (Tameside). A total of 33 members were


appointed to TfGMC, representing the 10 district authorities.


Ex-Blair spokesman joins Network Rail’s comms team


Former BBC journalist Tom Kelly is to join Network Rail as corporate communications director. Kelly’s CV includes his work


for Downing Street as Tony Blair’s spokesman, the post of communications director for BAA, and his current role of communications director for the Financial Services Authority. Prior to this, he worked


for the BBC in London and Belfast for 16 years. Kelly said: ‘I will be joining


Network Rail at a time when the company needs to communicate better than ever with its customers, the wider public, its people and government. I hope to play my part in helping the company evolve into its new form.’


SHAW GETS DIRECTORSHIP

Wagon leasing company VTG Rail UK has named Ian Shaw


as its new sales and marketing director. An internal appointment, Shaw, 47, has worked for the company for 10 years, during which time he has moved across from the engineering side to sales. Prior to joining VTG, he worked


as a project engineer for Alstom on the original Pendolinos, and before that at Westinghouse Brakes. He said: ‘In my 10 years at


VTG I have played a major part in projects at the forefront of wagon innovation, so was delighted to take on this new role, which will see that work continue.’
