“Life is too short to paddle an ugly boat!” ACA MEMBER HIGH LIGHT Steve Scherrer

HOMETOWN: Born Denver, Colorado; raised in Portland, Oregon

MOST OF MY BOATS (AND I) CURRENTLY RESIDE IN: Ocean Park, Washington, where Lewis and Clark turned around to come home!

FAVORITE PLACES TO PADDLE: Cape Flattery to La Push, Washington; Cape Disappointment, WA (home); Grand Canyon (if you consider rowing!), Oswald West Park on the Oregon coast.

CURRENT POSITION/JOB: I work for Confluence Watersports (CWS). Official title: Training and Technical Specialist. Basically I wear a lot of hats at CWS. From research and development on boat design to customer service to field sales. I travel around (a lot!) with my wife, Cindy,

to events all over the country as a CWS ambassador, promoting good education, the ACA and our products!

I started paddling in the Boy Scouts when I was 10. Canoe merit badge was my first. Been in a canoe on and off ever since. Began paddling whitewater in high school and graduated to a kayak in the late ‘70s. Got pretty hooked on whitewater kayaking and went the full circle in squirt designs, old school creeking and play boating. With my wife and another partner, I started Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe (AC) in 1986 in Portland, OR. Certified ACA whitewater kayak instructor in ‘91. Became an IT to put certified instructors to work at AC and around the NW. Helped establish the new Swiftwater Rescue discipline in the NW with Charlie Walbridge way back when. Started sea

kayaking in the early ‘90s and became certified in ‘96. I saw the need for more instructors in the area so followed the IT route. ITE was next, both in L/5 coastal and Advance Whitewater. Began to phase out whitewater somewhat as sea kayaking took its grip on me. Helped Confluence design the Tempest sea kayak family in ‘01. Sold AC in ‘04 and went to work full time for CWS. Helped CWS with many of the recent designs. I got heavily involved with the ACA CKC and am supported by Confluence to participate. Helped establish the assessment system. CKC Chairperson for two years. Plans to become an ACA SUP instructor and IT ASAP! It’s all good! Any hobbies besides paddling? Motorcycle touring—very similar to kayak touring?

ARE ANYTHING BUT MAINSTREAM.
