MARK SCRIVER
A longtime Rapid contributor and acclaimed open boater, Scriver is well known in the whitewater community. He enjoys competing against his two sons at the Gull River Open Canoe Slalom Race (“A Race For Everyone,” p. 11). “When we’re on the water, we’re not moms, dads, grandparents or kids,” says Scriver. “We’re all just paddlers. It creates such strong, happy memories.”
DARIN McQUOID
McQuoid’s images have been published in National Geographic, the Wall Street Journal and Outside Magazine. He shares his knack for catching the perfect moment on film in “See It Their Way” (p. 25). His advice for those who are intimidated by more advanced photography: “Once you own a digital camera, pictures are basically free. Take many shots and learn from your mistakes.”
PHIL TIFO
Tifo splits his time between Squamish, British Columbia, and Ventura, California, photographing paddlers, surfers, snowboarders and climbers. “Working hard to get good photos is always worth it,” he says, describing a mission to get his toughest shot (p.34). “It’s like earning the perfect run down a river. The easy angles are fun but it’s the hard ones that get you remembered best.”
NEIL WRIGHT
A Rapid behind-the-scenes guy, Wright keeps paddlers informed on events, dreams up irresistible subscription offers and works on special projects like learning to roll a tandem open canoe with the boss (p. 19). If you’re looking for Wright outside of business hours, you’ll find him on his backyard run, the Madawaska River.
MICHAEL MECHAN
Rapid’s newest editorial team member and open boater, Mechan says he’s “not usually one to stop for photo ops.” Working on this special photo issue has inspired him to rethink his attitude. “Capturing moments on the river is totally worthwhile. The photos in this edition have me looking forward to documenting my future paddling trips.”
