PHIL TIFO

Tatlow Creek, Squamish, British Columbia

Spying the perfect natural shooting platform from the river, fellow photographer Bryan Smith and Tifo returned to get this shot. “We trekked for a solid hour with camera bags and tripods, fighting our way through alder thickets mixed with spiky devil’s club and massive fallen trees,” Tifo recalls. Rain the day before meant good flows for paddler Tim Kelton, but treacherous conditions for the hikers. Standing on the lip of the gorge, Tifo says, “We quickly forgot about the mission to get in, but once the show was over, the reality of the trek back sunk in. Two hours of the worst bushwhacking for 10 minutes of shooting.”
