NOW OR LATER? INVESTING IN LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES:

By Mark McGourty, CEO Pro Vita International Medical Center & Entrepreneur-In-Residence, TVM Capital MENA

HISTORY Long-term care facilities, or nursing homes, have been used in Western countries for more than 30 years. These facilities serve patients requiring preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative nursing care services for non-acute, long-term conditions. Most residents are frail and aged, often bedridden, although some use canes, walkers, or wheelchairs to get around. Stays are relatively long, the majority for life. Many nursing homes or long-term care facilities also care for patients who need to convalesce from their illness but no longer require acute hospitalization.

«About 1% of the UAE population is over 65 years of age»

Long term care facilities have not ‘caught

on’ in the MENA region for many reasons. One reason is that culturally families are expected to care for their loved ones in their homes; another is the shame that families can experience if they have to admit their loved one to a ‘nursing home’. Finally, many people view non-hospital care settings as less safe than the hospital environment. As more providers enter the market and provide international standards of medical care in the non-hospital setting, the local patient population will gain confidence in this new care model. It is only a matter of time before the population of the UAE begins to embrace such medical services in the same manner that they have embraced other new technologies.
