towards ambulatory health services, which means healthcare services that can be performed in an outpatient setting. So when we see the need for outpatient hospitals in other parts of the Middle East, we also see a growing need for ambulatory health services to be able to provide services in a comfortable outpatients setting within the UAE and to remove some of the strains on the already burdened hospitals trying to cope with high demand for healthcare services in the UAE and the wider region.
Q. What do you believe are the cornerstones of a healthy society? A. I believe community-based medicine is the main aspect for a healthier and productive society. By creating healthcare services within the communities where people live, you are able to rebuild the physician and patient bond. You are also able to re-establish the trust and confidence the patients have in their

providers but you are also able to identify, diagnose and treat illnesses at a relatively earlier stage where doctors are able to intervene earlier, hence the opportunity for successful outcomes is higher. Patients now have a caregiver or a guardian to take them through their life to pursue healthier lifestyles like eating habits and exercise. Another element is “community health awareness” including regular screenings, checkups and regular lifestyle maintenance programmes. Community health can be delivered through family clinics and through primary healthcare services. We at United Eastern Medical have embarked
on a very aggressive roll out plan for a number of family clinics. We focused on having the facilities available in newly established communities and will soon be launching our family clinic at Al Raha beach. We believe that residents who lack access to vital services of healthcare will come to these new facilities. So we are looking at providing these services in areas where they are needed the most and then expanding into other facilities and perhaps areas which don’t have the residence capacity and are not densely populated, but need to have some support for residents, such as areas in the western region and the outskirts Abu Dhabi city and surrounding region. As far plans for UEMedical, our focus has been on Abu Dhabi over the past two years and this will continue to be our focus for the coming two years too. Later, we will expand our services to the rest of the UAE and with broader geographical approach into the rest of the GCC. ■
