British Institute of Cleaning Science

The value of training and accreditation

Stan Atkins, group chief executive officer of the British Institute of Cleaning Science, provides practical advice.

People often wrongly ignore the importance of training their cleaning operatives and, with the global eco- nomic downturn, it is the first thing to be cut. Training in the cleaning industry may be unfairly dis- missed as an unnecessary cost. In reality, businesses cannot afford not to invest in setting high standards to create the best possible impression for existing and potential customers. Untrained cleaning

operatives are likely to cost less than the services of a company whose staff are fully trained and accredited. However, you will notice much better results from a trained operative and it will usually take them significantly less time to keep your premises clean and hygienic.

Cutting corners on standards can be dangerous. We should always clean for health. Without correctly cleaned buildings and premises, outbreaks of infection and a number of health and safety issues can arise, including accidents from slips and trips. It is also important to provide a high standard of cleaning in order to maintain a good reputation for your company and for the wellbeing of your employees, visitors or guests.

Training brings numerous benefits to businesses. They will have a reliable, professional and motivated workforce. The individual being trained will gain confidence from learning new and important skills and from the investment that has been given to

them. The knowledge they gain will be beneficial to their employment and reinforce good practice in the workplace. Companies can reduce their

expenditure and outgoings in the long term as a result of increased productivity. During our 50 years of operation, we have worked hard to encourage best practice in the cleaning industry through standards and accreditation. The Institute has had much success and has introduced a number of industry recognised qualifications and courses delivered through approved external providers. These have helped to improve the standards of cleaning throughout the country and, in recent years, internationally too. Training routes are extremely accessible and cost effective. For instance, take the Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite (CPSS), the improved assessment scheme for accredited training in the cleaning industry launched this year with a minimum requirement of three essential skills to ensure the safety of operatives, safety of users of the building, and sustainability of the building. The operatives then learn unit skills which are directly relevant to them and the environment that they are cleaning in. A new level one Certificate in Cleaning is also available, accredited to the

Qualifications and Credit Framework. This

qualification is currently eligible for funding via the Skills Funding Agency and is designed to complement the CPSS, as an alternative route for those who are looking for funded learning. Carpex/Windex 2012 – full details announced 8-9 March 2012 – Ricoh Arena, Coventry

The organisers of

Carpex/Windex 2012, being staged at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on 8-9 March 2012, are looking forward to the most successful event ever. Martin Scott, exhibition sales director, said: “Carpex/Windex is tailor- made for carpet & upholstery equipment and window cleaning equipment manufacturers and suppliers to market, sell and promote their products and services to a highly targeted audience – and the 2012 event will have more to offer than ever before.”

Carpex/Windex is

organised every two years by Quartz Publishing & Exhibitions Ltd, publisher of C&M, with the support of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) and the Federation of Window Cleaners (FWC).

The previous event, staged in 2010, also at the Ricoh Arena, attracted 2491 professionals from the carpet and window cleaning industries who visited the

show during the two days, with almost 75% of them (1835) having a direct responsibility for purchasing. Martin Scott continued: “Despite the tough economic situation the quality and number of visitors to the 2010 event surpassed our expectations. 59% of the visitors were proprietors of either window cleaning companies, carpet & upholstery cleaning

companies, contract cleaners, Deb secures R&D funding

Deb Group's research and development team recently beat off strong competition from a number of established internation- al businesses to win a funding award. One of only two awards made in the category of ‘product design’, the funding will support the cost of a PhD student at Hull University, Deb's partner institution in this technology. Dr John Hines, Deb Group R&D director, said: "We are thrilled to receive this award as it releases the resources we need to really unlock the potential of this exciting new idea."

At the centre of this award and the future PhD programme is a technology advanced by Hull University that Deb believes could radically reduce the amount of water required for effective cleaning and sanitisation, enabling much improved hand hygiene in water-stressed areas of the world or where water is not available. Professor Bernard Binks of Hull University added: "Through this award with Deb, we hope to

or distributors – with a combined annual spend on cleaning equipment of over £300 million.”

Shaun Bradbury, managing director of Dry Fusion UK, said of the previous event: “Carpex/Windex marked a real high point for Dry Fusion as we had worked so hard in the months prior to the show to finalise and perfect the many new products that we planned to launch at the event. These included the

completely revamped Dry Fusion carpet cleaning system and the new Cristal Fusion upholstery cleaning system. Despite prior reservations about how busy it would be in the current climate, we had a fantastic show with a great deal of interest in the new machines and products.”

With the market showing real signs of recovery, the organisers are confident that the 2012 event will surpass the high standards achieved in 2010. To make sure you are part of a winning formula, please contact Martin Scott on 01895 454438 or by Email: martinscott@quartzltd.com.

learn how to manipulate the formulation space of our new technology to deliver a range of benefits and active ingredients, as well as to develop scaled-up processing routes to take this innovation to market."

The EPSRC-funded Industrial CASE award was made by Chemistry Innovation, one of 16 Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs), leading the national innovation agenda for the chemistry-using industries. Darren Ragheb, product design leader at the KTN, said: "Deb's application was particularly strong in that their innovation addresses several of our key strategic criteria. It is truly novel, has the potential to meet important market needs in hand hygiene, and has potential for much wider application beyond that. Whilst this project has very strong industrial relevance, it will also provide the student with a stimulating and challenging research experience."

Potential PhD students are currently being interviewed ahead of the 3.5 year programme's start date of October 2011. www.debgroup.com
