You’ll see flower boxes abloom with tulips and an array of colorful potted plants in villages and towns all over Holland. Gardens grace the landscapes everywhere you look, paying homage to an economy which is largely horticultural based. The tulip is perhaps the most definitive image of the Netherlands, along with daffodils and hyacinths, and with more than nine billion bulbs produced every year, two thirds of which are grown for export to countries around the world, it’s not hard to see why. Visits to the Aalsmeer Flower Auction, Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, and the Floriade, held once every ten years, showcase a shared national pride in horticulture and expressive traditions best said with flowers.
