ngagement can be a busy time – there are so many wed- ding decisions to be made – and it’s easy to get swept up in planning the perfect wedding day. You’ll be making decisions about your hair, what to wear, which shoes to purchase and flowers to hold, but while all of these wonderful decisions are swirling around you, don’t forget your engagement pictures.
Engagement portraits are very important. First, think about the amount of time that you’ll be spending with your photographer on your wedding day. A pre-wedding portrait session allows them an opportunity to get to know you and your fiancé before the wedding day, and allows you an opportunity to make sure their shooting style compliments your personal style. Second, imagine how much more at ease you’ll feel on the big day knowing that your photographer will capture you well. When we have clients who are camera shy or think of themselves as “unphotogenic” or “chronic blinkers”, we strongly encourage them to schedule an engagement session with us. It gives us an opportunity to prove how beautiful you can be – allowing our brides and grooms to relax on the wedding day knowing we can create stunning images of the two of them! If you schedule an engagement session with you’re your photographer, you’ll know they can photograph you well and you’ll have beautiful portraits of the two of you as a result. Lastly, engagement is a time that will end – you’ll eventually be married! Capture an exciting period of your lives you’ll never repeat!
Now that you know how important engagement sessions are, follow these helpful tips to get you the images you crave!
CHOOSE A STYLE Consider who you and your fiancé are together. What kind of couple are you? Vintage and Eclectic? Consider the local diner, choose a time-period and dress to suit. Classic all American? Shop LL. Bean’s Signature Line or incorporate an antique truck and outdoors location. Romantic and feminine? Adding flowers can be the perfect touch, along with lace and a location that quotes poetry, like a fabulous mansion or a garden filled with spring flowers.
WHAT TO WEAR Once you’ve chosen the style for your session, purchase a signature piece of clothing that expresses it. Since you’ve decided on the look, make it loud and clear – make a statement! Find colors or trends that jump out at you. Don’t feel the need to be too matchy, don’t wear all black or all white, avoid shirts that are labeled with text or large logos, and if all else fails and you’re not sure what to do, bring an optional change of clothing and consult your photographer for their advice. HAIR AND MAKEUP I encourage my couples to have their hair and makeup professionally styled on the day of their engagement session. It gives an extra boost of self-confidence and ensures gorgeous results. In addition to making you look your best, you’ll be certain to feel more confident during your session and more pleased with the results aſterwards.
