Aubry Recognized for Accomplishments National Honors Reflect Positively on MechE
Since the last issue of Carnegie Mech, Professor Nadine Aubry—Department Head for Mechanical Engineering—has received two prestigious honors for her work as an engineer and an educator. This national recognition shines a spot- light on the Department, confirming its position as a leading mechanical
engineering program with world-class faculty. In February, Aubry was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional honors an engineer can achieve. Aubry was elected to the NAE for her contribu- tions to low-dimensional models of turbulence and microfluidic devices, and for her leadership in engineering education. NAE membership honors professionals who have made important contributions to engineering theory and practice, and who have demonstrated unusual accomplishments in pioneering new and developing fields of technology. At a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C., in October, Aubry will join 2,290 NAE members and 202 foreign associ- ates in an award process that began in 1964. In December, Aubry was named an Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for her outstanding work in the field of fluid dynamics as it applies to the field of aerospace. She was inducted at
Sitti Honored With SPIE Award
Associate Professor Metin Sitti has received the prestigious SPIE 2011 Nano-Engineering Award in recogni- tion of his pioneering work on tip-based nanorobotic manipulation systems. Sitti will receive the award, give a plenary talk, and moderate a panel discussion on micro/nano engineering
on April 28 at the SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing Conference in Orlando, Florida. His lecture will be titled “Tip-Based Nanorobotic Manipulation Systems.” Approxi- mately 7,000 scientists and engineers are expected to attend this five-day event sponsored by SPIE, the interna-
the 49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, held in Janu- ary in Orlando, Florida—joining 186 other Associate Fellows who were chosen from more than 35,000 AIAA members worldwide.
“Nadine is an excellent role model and researcher, and these awards recognize her for both her technical and lead- ership skills,” says Pradeep K. Khosla, Dean of the College of Engineering. “This outstanding recognition is a tribute to the leading-edge, innovative spirit of our problem- solving engineering faculty.” Aubry’s interdisciplinary research has helped
her garner other important awards, including the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award and her election as Fellow of the American Physical Society, of the Ameri- can Society of Mechanical Engineers, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She also was Chair of the U.S. National Committee on Theoreti- cal and Applied Mechanics, a National Research Council committee that represents the U.S. internationally in scien- tific matters related to the field of mechanics. In addition to serving as Department Head, she is the Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Aubry holds a

tional society for optics and photonics. Sitti has received national and global attention for his continuing innovations in the Nanorobotics Laboratory at MechE, including water-running and swimming robots. He has also formed his own company, nanoGriptech LLC, to commercialize his gecko-inspired repeatable adhesives. Sitti and his company were recently featured in U.S. News Science in the article “Geckos Inspire Stronger Adhesives.” Sitti holds a
B.Sc. and
M.Sc. from Bogazici University in
Turkey, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. He was a Research Scientist and Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley before joining the MechE faculty.•
