Grad Students Win CIT Fellowships
Seven graduate students from the Department of Mechanical Engineer- ing were recently recognized with prestigious fellowships from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT). Since these fellowships are very com- petitive across CIT, this achievement reflects very positively on the entire Department.

Doctoral student Xinghua Liang has been awarded the Liang Ji-Dian Graduate Fellowship, a merit-based honor created through the generosity of Liang Ji-Dian. This fellowship sup- ports the studies of highly deserving Ph.D. students of Chinese heritage. • • • • •
Senior Ray Barsa was recently fea- tured in The Tartan, Carnegie Mellon’s student newspaper, for his artistic work in his metal-cutting workshop, where he builds machine pieces for Caterpillar, Inc. Senior Samantha Shropshire is among the newest recipients of the prestigious Boeing Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded annually to students from across the U.S. who are interested in a career in the aerospace industry, and include a financial award to support winners’ studies in a related field, such as engineering.•
Masters candidates Kenan Isik and Boyuan Li are recipients of the Nick G. Vlahakis Graduate Fellowship. This award was endowed by MechE alum Nick Vlahakis (M.S. 1974) to help support the masters-level studies of highly deserving students enrolled in engineering and technical graduate programs.

Ph.D. candidates Katherine Fu, Yigit Menguc, Iacopo Gentilini, and Samarth Raut have received the Bertucci Graduate Fellowship, a merit award which supports the work of doctoral students in engineering disciplines. This fellowship was cre- ated by John and Claire Bertucci. Raut was recognized for work in both Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems, while other honorees are focused in MechE.•
