controls, and public policy initiatives—all of which is aimed at tackling the global challenge of environmental protection. More evidence of our professors’ excellence can be found in our “Faculty News” section on pages 6-9. We are proud to announce that Assistant Professor Jonathan Malen has won a Young Investigator Award from the U.S. Air Force, while Assistant Professor Shawn Litster has been presented with a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. With these honors, MechE has set a new record in its history: Eleven junior faculty members hired since 2002 have won Young Investigator or CAREER Awards. In the Fall issue of Carnegie Mech, we will be sharing exciting news about new junior faculty who will add to the diversity of expertise in our Department. MechE has set a new record: Eleven junior faculty members hired since 2002 have won Young Investigator or CAREER Awards.

reflect positively on the quality of our program (see pages 10-13). In May, alum Aron Ralston—who inspired the movie “127 Hours”—will deliver the keynote address at Carnegie Mellon’s Commencement ceremony. And in this issue we profile alum Steven Fulton, who achieved incredible success with Pittsburgh- based Respironics and now mentors young entrepreneurs. Our students continue to be involved in global collaboration, whether through their study-abroad experiences (see page 15) or international service-learning trips sponsored by the Department (see page 12). Through the generosity of alum Phillip Mervis and his wife Sheryl Facktor, in 2011 we are able to continue these outreach efforts that enable MechE students to apply their engineering skills in international settings. A MechE delegation just returned from Jamaica, and a return trip to the Philippines is planned for May. Our dual Ph.D. program with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, founded last year, is off to a promising start. Four students have already begun taking classes in Singapore, and two more students have been admitted for Fall 2011. MechE has also formed a new strategic partnership with the Shiv Nadar Foundation in India, which will enable more international students to earn Carnegie Mellon degrees (see page 19).

This is an exciting time to be a member of the MechE community. As always, we invite you to share your own recent news and successes with our entire extended family for a future edition of Carnegie Mech.•
