Department News MechE Introduces Curriculum Changes

The Department of Mechanical Engineer- ing continuously reviews and updates its curricula to ensure that both graduate and undergraduate coursework meets the evolving needs of the engineering profession. We are thrilled to announce two exciting changes.

Steve Collins

MechE has developed a new sopho- more-level course called “Introduction to

Computer-Aided Design.” This one-unit mini course will provide students with a foundation for using CAD software to model and analyze both parts and assemblies. Initially, SolidWorks software will be used. This class is designed to familiarize students with the CAD tools they will use as working engineers.

In addition, new physical prototyping modules have been added to “Engineering Design I,” with the transi- tion of the course to Assistant Professor Steve Collins. Students will individually design and build streamlined, high-strength, rapid-prototyped parts; design and build a

Department News Briefs A New Look for the Department

As Spring Carnival, Commencement, and other events bring alumni back to MechE, these visitors will notice a refreshing change as they enter the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We have recently remodeled the reception area of the main office, in order to create a more welcoming, updated space. This area includes new carpet, paint, and seating, as well as new artwork and refresh- ments for visitors to enjoy. If you haven’t visited MechE recently, we encourage you to stop by this Spring and enjoy the new space!•

Save the Date: COMMENCEMENT 2011

The Department of Mechanical Engineering will celebrate its annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14, in the Weigand Gymnasium at the University Center. The event will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and all alumni are welcome to attend.

This departmental celebration dovetails with Commence-

ment Weekend at Carnegie Mellon, which features a variety of events for both graduates and alumni—including a jazz reception on Saturday evening. On Sunday at 11:00 a.m., MechE alumnus Aron Ralston will deliver the keynote address at the University’s Commencement Ceremony (see page 13). To view the full Commencement Weekend schedule of events, visit http://www.cmu.edu/about/commencement/ weekend-events/index.shtml.

Please note that, due to the heavy traffic associated with the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 15, all times given for that date are approximate. If returning to campus for Sunday’s events, please plan accordingly and allow plenty of travel time.•

robotic gripper in teams; and design a high-performance electromechanical system. These new hands-on projects will help students build their design intuition, using real- world testing experience. A robotics expert, in his research Collins uses math- ematical models, experimental robots, and biomechanics experiments to support the design of biomechatronic devices for human rehabilitation, assistance, and augmen- tation. He joined the Department in 2010 after completing post-doctoral research at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.•
