The new pathfinders
I can’t remember when I first heard the phrase ‘global village’. I guess I was probably a naive teenager at the time. What I can recall are the images these powerful words conjured up inmymind. I saw pictures of a bizarre multinational garden party with people fromall corners of the planet dancing round theMaypole. What else would a global village look like?
As years passed I started to realise that when government officials trotted
out ‘global village’ they were actually preparing the population for a new period in history where national borders would slowly fade away, offering the opportunity to travelmore freely, explore new cultures and sell our products and services to hitherto untapped customers. Sounds OK, I thought.
Then reality hit home. How can the residents of a global village cohabit in
harmony when they all live their lives to different standards, some voluntarily, some imposed?
Yes, we started selling our products and services to the world, but the world
started selling their products and services back, big time. Tomakematters worse, many of these regions weren’tmatching our standards of social care and could thus undercut our pricing.
So here we are today. Luckily, for you and I, a crowd of forward thinking,
hardworking, entrepreneurial characters decided that regardless of the ups and downs of this new global village they would compete with the world regardless. These companies are the new pathfinders and you will find some of themin our Best of British supplement starting on page 17.
