Tasked with sourcing sub-contract manufacturing services? CRS Electronics' Colin Souter believes British is still best when compared with the true cost of offshore sourcing
Purchasing staff need to take account of the true cost of offshore sourcing, advises Colin. This goes beyond looking at the price of the part to include factors such as the fluctuation of the dollar and euro.
It is also important to consider potential delays when introducing
design or component changes due to time delays and large batch quantities, plus engineering time regarding correcting manufacturing faults which would be too costly to return to the manufacturer. Bear inmind there can also be delays in deliveries due to shipping difficulties and logistics problems caused by unexpected natural disasters such as the sad events recently witnessed in Japan.
Having been involved in supplying contract electronic services for
over 37-years, Colin’s view is this: “British companies are still best and cost effective at supplying service and quality.
