DECORATIVE ARTS Barrie Cooke This IMMA exhibition of some 70 paintings and sculptural works, from the early Sixties to the present,marks Barrie Cooke’s 80th birthday. The exhibition runs from 15 June to 18 September 2011. www.imma.ie


The Art Books of Henri Matisse Featuring four of Matisse’s most artistically significant books, includ- ing an illustrated version of James Joyce’s Ulysses, this Chester Beatty Library exhibition marks the first public display of these works in Europe. It runs from 26 May to 25 September. www.cbl.ie


RHA Annual Exhibition The 181st RHA Annual Exhibition where, as always, more than half the work on show will have been selected from open submission, takes place from 23 May to 30 July. www.royalhibernianacademy.ie


THEATRE Translations Thirty years after it was first pro- duced, Brian Friel’s modern master- piece is back on the Abbey stage, this time produced by Conall Morrison, running from 23 June to 13 August. www.abbeytheatre.ie


Molly Sweeney Another Brian Friel play, Molly Sweeney, will run at the Gate this summer, from 23 June to 23 July. This is a humorous and moving story of a woman, blind since birth, who has the chance to regain her sight. www.gate-theatre.ie


Hay Fever Noel Coward’s popular comedy of bad manners is directed by Patrick Mason and will include perform- ances from Barbara Brennan, Stephen Brennan and Ingrid


Craigie. This production runs from 28 July to 24 September at the Gate. www.gate-theatre.ie


MUSIC Opera Scottish Opera presents Rigoletto, Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic tale of inno- cence lost, conducted by Tobias Ringborg, at the Grand Canal Theatre on 21, 23 and 25 June 2011. www.grandcanaltheatre.ie


DANCE Ballet


Birmingham Royal Ballet will per- form for the first time in Dublin from 7 to 9 July when the company presents Peter Wright’s production of Coppélia at the Grand Canal Theatre. www.grandcanaltheatre.ie


FESTIVALS Kilkenny Arts Festival Music, theatre, dance, film, litera- ture, visual arts, crafts, street per- formance, children’s events and more are on the menu for this year’s Kilkenny Arts Festival, which

Skibbereen Arts Festival This year’s festival, which runs at a range of venues throughout the West Cork town from 22 to 30 July, includes poetry, an outdoor film screen, comedy and theatre, along with a wide range of music. www.skibbereenartsfestival.com.


Galway Arts Festival Blondie, Afrocubism, De La Soul and Bell X1 are among the acts con- firmed for the Galway Arts Festival, which runs from 11 to 24 July and includes theatre and dance, music, talks, visual art, com- edy and family and street entertain- ment. www.galwayartsfestival.com


Tall Ships Race The annual Tall Ships Race of up to 70 vessels and their crews kicks off in Waterford between 30 June and 3 July against a festival backdrop that will include lots of street the- atre, fireworks, music and food. www.waterfordtallshipsrace.ie
