1. Alan Cook, chairman, Irish Life & Permanent Group Holdings
Alan Cook has been appointed chairman of Irish Life & Permanent Group Holdings. Cook takes over from Gillian Bowler who last December announced that she would retire as chairman and director once a successor had been appointed. Cook has had a long and distinguished career in financial services and public service. He has been managing director of the UK Post Office, chief operating officer of Prudential (UK and Europe) and chief executive of National Savings and Investments. He is currently chairman of the UK Highways Agency and a non- executive director of the UK Department of Transport. He has indicated that he will step down from his directorships at the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Ombudsman Service to focus on his new role. He is also a governor of the University of Bedfordshire and chairman of Action for ME.
2. JimBrown, chief executive, Ulster Bank
Ulster Bank has announced the appointment of Jim Brown to the position of chief executive. Brown has most recently held the position of CEO retail and commercial markets Asia for Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), having worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years. In his most recent role, he was responsible for the day- to-day management of the retail and commercial busi- nesses leading over 7,000
employees across Asia and the Middle East. A native of New Zealand, Brown has spent his career to date working across the Asia Pacific region. Prior to joining RBS, he held senior management roles at ABN Amro. He also held various senior positions at Citibank in Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.
3. CharlesMcManus, chief financial officer, Ulster Bank
Ulster Bank has appointed Charles McManus as chief financial officer. He will also join the Ulster Bank board. McManus has most recently been chief financial officer at the Royal Bank of Canada Europe. He has held senior management roles at Royal Bank of Canada, including chief financial officer capital markets USA in New York and global head of product control. He has also held a number of senior positions at Hambros, including finance director and group financial controller. With over 28 years’ experience in the financial services sector, he qualified as an accountant with KPMG and holds a BA honours in account- ancy from London Guildhall University.
4. Philip Smith, president, Insurance Institute of Ireland
CEO of RSA Insurance Ireland, Philip Smith has been elected the new president of the Insurance Institute of Ireland. He currently serves on the boards of RSA Insurance, the Irish Insurance Federation,
Trygg-Hansa, 123 Money, Sertus Underwriting, Bench- mark Underwriting and EGI Holdings (Belfast). Prior to joining RSA Insurance, he was a senior partner with Accenture Ireland.
6.Mary Lou Nolan, country manager, Cisco Ireland
5. Eamon Shackleton, chief executive officer, Insurance Institute of Ireland
The executive committee of the Insurance Institute of Ireland has promoted Eamon Shackleton to chief executive officer. He has served as the institute’s chief operating officer for the past year. As CEO, Shackleton’s role will be to guide the Insurance Institute of Ireland through an extensive educational develop- ment phase, with the institute aiming to be recognised as a world-class provider of profes- sional development in the insurance sector. Shackleton is a former member of the executive team of the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and held a number of senior management positions for companies based in the US and the Middle East.
Mary Lou Nolan has been appointed country manager for Cisco Ireland. Nolan, who joined Cisco Ireland 12 months ago, has over 15 years’ experi- ence within the IT industry. She was previously director of sales for Hewlett-Packard Ireland. Nolan is a member of the Sales Institute of Ireland and a busi- ness management graduate from the College of Marketing and Design, Dublin. She takes over from Kim Majerus, who is returning to the United States to take up a new role as chief of staff, service provider, Cisco US.
7. Elizabeth Headon, non-executive director, Kenmare Resources
Elizabeth Headon has joined the board of Kenmare Resources as a non-executive director. She is currently chief executive and director of the Digicel Foundation Haiti, based in Port au Prince. Headon previously worked for Kenmare on the Moma site in 2007 and 2008, developing KMAD, the commu- nity development association.
