HOLT
USA MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
How did you get started playing field hockey? In elementary school a Dutch lady (Coralie Van Marken) did a P.E. course at my school (Bedford Open Elementary, Camarillo, CA). I liked it, so she put me on a local club team. I picked it up pretty quick and stuck with it. A couple years later
What is one thing you can’t live without? My friends and my family.
What is the best advice a coach has given you? The best athletes have the worst memories. If you're a quarterback and you've just thrown an interception. If on you’re next drive you continue to think about the interception you just threw... odds are you'll throw another one. You gotta play the next drive like the last one never happened.
Where has field hockey taken you around the world? Hockey has taken me to a lot of countries. I got my first cap in Auckland, New Zealand; not a bad place to visit. I have played club hockey in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
When you are not playing field hockey, what do you like to do? I love to do anything outside – tennis, hiking, biking, swimming, camping. I love taking photos and traveling! Now that it's cold, I’ve learned how to knit and bake and cook. One day I'd like to open a coffee shop, so I like to go to new ones when I can…and try their yummy treats.
What are your personal goals for the next five years? Make my fundamentals the best they can be because that is all hockey is. Oh and go to where the pigeons are.
What advice can you give to boys wanting to play the sport? Stick with it, embrace the challenges that come, and always look to try harder and get better.

How can we grow the sport in the United States? I think if we continue to expand our club system, and encourage hockey at the high school level like Nick has started to develop, and then get it into the college system.
