The Reverse Stick Hit (aka Lowdown Backhand)
by Paula Conway USA Field Hockey Manager of Olympic and Athletic Development
The ability to pass the ball on the reverse side or on the backhand is becoming a very important part of the game especially on turf surfaces. The reverse hit or backhand is a priority in skill acquisition and one that we must learn to use effectively. It is critical that you are dynamic while learning and executing the skill. A free hit situation is the only time the hit should be executed with a stationary ball.
1.your hands should be together and slightly down from the top of the stick in “pancake grip.”
2. Push the ball away from yourself. Step your right foot on the line the ball has just traveled.
3. Simulate a double-handed Frisbee throw, with your stick, from your left hip to your right toe as you address the ball.
4 . Create a 90º angle with your right leg. This motion will drive your left knee to the turf. Get on bended knee (almost) with your chest over your right knee.
• Focus on getting your knuckles wet. This will mean you are low enough to execute consistently and effectively.
5. Create a right angle between your foot, the ball and the intended target.
6. your stick should hit the ball on the blade of the stick about 3” up from the toe or hook of the stick.
7. The follow through should be low and across your body.
