With the implementation of the self-start rule into the game, the tempo has significantly increased. Coaches may notice a decrease in performance of their athletes throughout the match due to the quick transition of play. It is becoming increasingly important to use substitutions effectively. your philosophy of the “starting line-up” may change to help fit your substitution needs.
Tips on how to use substitutions effectively • Train your players to play in multiple positions to give you substitution flexibility
• Ensure that both defensive and attacking penalty corner specialty skills are covered in your substitutions
• Create a system so that you are not substituting key players at the same time
• Make your players aware of the appropriate times to substitute in different positions or situations
• Communicate substitutions prior to the match so athletes feel prepared in their roles
• Convey that every athlete has a role. Some players coming off the bench may only play a few minutes to give top players time to recover
• Learn your players’ signs of mental and physical fatigue prior to a competition
• Rotate your players consistently so you can keep the tempo of the game as high as possible for as long as possible
Challenges • overcoming the perception that you don’t have the depth to substantiate a substitute policy
• Dealing with adversity in the games that alter your plan. Players may be under- performing or injuries may occur
• Creating a substitution plan that ensures players on the field cover all of the specialty skills. This requires a depth of personnel in every key skill position
Benefits • Players’ performance will not decline through the duration of the match
• your team will be able to maintain a fast pace tempo throughout the match
• Coaches coach. It gives the opportunity to coach the athletes during their breaks
• Involves bench players and keeps team morale high because everyone has a role • Super STARS to Super TEAMS
