Abus Diskus Padlocks Shrug-Off Attacks
Whether it’s a high-speed ram-raid or an industrial power saw, the ABUS Diskus padlock proved its strength and endurance during a robbery of a Bradford engineering distributor.
Dixon Hall & Co Ltd was the victim of an overnight break-in by determined thieves. The attackers ram-raided the premise’s front gates, which were secured by an ABUS Diskus 26/70 padlock. While the padlock held firm the gate’s hinges were ripped apart by the force of the impact. The double gates were later found on the floor still linked by the Diskus padlock.
Once on the premises and through a number of security doors the thieves met a second Diskus 26/70 securing an iron bar across an internal door. The thieves tried to slice through the padlock with a power saw but failed to cut the hardened steel alloy shackle. Instead the thieves resorted to cutting through the iron bar to eventually gain entry. What is even more remarkable is the fact that the Diskus padlock is still in working order today keyed alike to the same key as it’s brother on the gate. Richard Whitaker, director of Dixon Hall & Co Ltd, said: “We were obviously delighted with the performance of the ABUS padlocks and it’s another reason why we sell them. The two locks considerably slowed the thieves’ progress so by the time they gained access they had little opportunity to loot our stock before they heard the police sirens.”
The Diskus padlock was invented in 1949 by ABUS more than 60 years ago and has been widely imitated but never equalled. Still made in Germany ABUS’ latest generation Diskus use the best available technology, including deep weld technology, anti-saw plates, and hardened steel shackles now complemented by ‘Nanoprotect’ rust proofing, ensuring a lock that can be neither beaten by man or nature.
ABUS UK’s MD Nick Vanderhoest says: “This just goes to prove what our industry knows – the ABUS Diskus padlock is the original and the best. Now some thieves know it too.”
