Hire Update Hewden scores RoSPA Gold hat trick
Congratulations to Hewden.. For the third year running, Hewden, the national multi-product rental specialist, has achieved Gold in the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety
Awards. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a safety charity, launched its awards programme 55 years ago. The scheme looks not only at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.
Hewden has become the first plant rental company to achieve Gold for three years in a row, and this latest achievement adds to the company’s 2011 short listing for the HAE and ERA awards for health and safety. David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Hewden has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.” On achieving the award, Martin Williams, National EHS&Q and Technical Manager for Hewden, added: “The RoSPA Gold Award relates to the safe performance of our operations and locations across the UK and adds to our already impressive health and safety credentials. “Hewden uses a wide range of communication tools to keep the issue of health and safety fresh in employees’ minds. On the back of this increased awareness, the company’s health and safety results have been significant, as is reflected with this latest Gold Award.” The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive, marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction.
Competitive awards are presented in more than 20 sectors, and specialist awards recognise excellence in specific areas, such as the management of occupational
road risk. The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011 are sponsored by NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), the leading health and safety professional examining body.
Performance, Reliability And Service Support Prompts Another Order
From Lechkin Fencing Services A new Volvo EC18C mini excavator has been delivered to Lechkin Fencing Services of Comrie, near Perth thanks to the performance and reliability of the three EC15B models purchased before it and the service support provided by Volvo’s customer support centre based at Stirling according to proprietor Gavin Harrower. Starting out on his own in 1999 Mr Harrower has evolved his business which now specialises in all types of fencing contracts throughout Scotland with clients ranging from major road building civil engineers, airport authorities, local authorities as well as the private sector. The recent addition of a Volvo EC18C mini excavator complete with trailer is the fourth edition to his fleet and is due to the performance and reliability of the model it replaces – the EC15BXTV. “I can’t fault the product,” says Mr Harrower. “It’s just about bullet proof, but it’s also re-assuring to know we can rely on Volvo for service and back up with a support centre based down the road at Stirling,” he continued.
The new machine will be deployed on the typical fence building work undertaken by Lechkin Fencing Services including excavation for fence posts utilising a hydraulic auger and standard excavator buckets as well as a hydraulic hammer for tackling difficult underlying ground conditions. The new Volvo EC18C is one of four machines ranging between 1.5 and 2.0 tonnes and is a direct replacement for the EC15B XTV model. Powered by a 12.3 Kw (16.8hp) engine, the machine features automatic two speed travel and extendable undercarriage as standard. One significant change on the new models is that hydraulic hoses for the digging equipment are now routed through the boom and cylinders are top mounted to minimize on site damage. The machine supplied to Lechkin Fencing Services features a full cab – a canopy version is also available. The 1.8 tonne compact excavator also benefits from load-sensing hydraulic system for fast cycle times, even when carrying out multiple functions. Maximum dig depth is a generous 2.3 metres. A single piece engine hood provides unobstructed access to all the engine components whilst the instrument panel provides at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions. The cab’s easy to clean flat floor panel lifts for access to hydraulics and main control valve.

Zapkut Managing Director, Keith Bunker, explained: “The latest ZM is a completely new machine, redesigned from the ground up. By basing the machine on a steel frame and employing leading edge manufacturing and design methods, we’ve been able to remove significant cost from the production process without compromising specification or build quality in any way. In fact the rigidity of the new steel framed ZM machines is comparable to that of machines costing several times as much.” The new Zapkut ZM range has been designed with ruthless practicality in mind, its specification developed to meet needs identified by users across various sectors. Highly versatile, these units are suitable for a wide range of materials, including natural and man-made timber products as well as sign making materials such as aluminium sheet, Corex, Foamex, acrylics, polycarbonates, and aluminium composite sheets such as Dibond. A key advantage for sign makers is that no blade changes are necessary. Zapkut has developed a special blade suitable for all these sign making materials. For those working with timber, Zapkut has a range of blades designed specifically for its machines, and the expertise to advise on the most suitable blade for any given application.
Chipping and shattering of thin materials such as acrylic sheets and laminates can be avoided by using a backing board, which with the ZM range’s depth control can be used many times before needing replacement.
The ZM’s moving column design means that once the sheet is positioned on the frame, it need not be moved again, whether rip or cross cutting. By contrast, on a fixed column saw, sheets must be fed through the machine in order to rip. There is no need for this on the ZM, making it extremely compact in operation and ideal for smaller workshops, or even mounting in a van.
