Mallorca NEED TO KNOW

Mallorca gardens to visit As befits such a lush island, Mallorca has a number of botanical gardens open to the public. Robert Maunder of First Mallorca says the best ones to visit are Jardines de Alfabia and Jardí Botànic de Sóller, which are situated near and in the town of Sóller respectively. The Jardines de Alfabia (www. jardinesdealfabia.com) `are my favourite,' says Mr Maunder. `Here, one forgets the outside word, seduced by the perfume of colourful climbing plants and shrubs, exotic flowers, giant ferns, lily ponds, bird songs, sun and shadows, all set against a back- drop of soft Moorish architecture.' By contrast, the Jardí Botànic de Sóller

charge from about £14 an hour, and develop- ments offer gardening services as part of the package. Savills are selling a classical- style seven-bedroom villa with a large Medi- terranean garden on the Son Vida estate, near Palma. For sale at for £7.03 million, it has gardeners at hand to tend to its brilliant blaze of bougainvillea while you relax. Julian Cunningham of Deià's Knight

Frank associates Harris & Butterworth is selling an outstanding estate with beautiful gardens just outside Deià. Once part of a large domain belonging to Archduke Louis Salvador of Austria, Finca Es Murtera now stands in 8.5 hectares (21 acres) of grounds. The main finca and adjoining guest house, which take up 550sq m of built space, are in Mallorcan style, with a stone façade, rus- tic marble floors and a profusion of antique beams and doors. The principal reception room has an enormous fireplace, as does the sitting area of the master suite.

Outside, an infinity pool has perfect

views over the sea. The gardens, which are floodlit by night, have more than 200 large trees, and thousand of flowering plants set in terraced beds. The rest of the land is mostly terraced in Mallorcan style, and is planted with pine trees and a mix of mature and new olive treesÐ enough to produce your own oil. Three other historic proper- ties pepper the grounds and come with renovation and development plans, designed by architect Antonio Juncosa and approved by the local authorities. The asking price is about £8.45 million.
