AFS Piedmont Chapter Helps Dedicate New VT FIRE Building Virginia Tech’s Foundry Institute for


Research and Education (VT FIRE) was dedicated in early April, culmi- nating a 10-year project in which the American Foundry Society (AFS) Pied- mont chapter has been instrumental. Te research center at Virginia Tech,


Blacksburg, Va., was conceived more than a decade ago to deliver a world- class educational and research opportu- nity for engineering and art students to cast metal objects and provide a venue for continuing education. Te Pied- mont chapter assisted in initiating VT FIRE and gaining interest and support at Virginia Tech. More than 20 firms, seven departments from two colleges of the university and several other AFS chapters also contributed. On April 5, more than 100 people attended the dedication of the Kroehling Advanced Materials Foundry, which will serve as the home of VT FIRE.


PSU’s Torielli Wins Technology Prize


Te American Foundry Society (AFS) and Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) awarded Rose Torielli, Penn State Univ. (PSU), University Park, Pa., first place in the 2011 AFS/FEF Student Technology Contest. Second place went to Mark Twilley, Michigan Technological Univ., Houghton, Mich. Nicholas Johnson and Michelle Loomis, also of Michi- gan Technological Univ., won honor- able mention. In all, AFS and FEF awarded $2,500 in scholarships to the four students.
