“My 40 years of experience convinces me that the next 10 years will be some of the best for manufacturing, specifically for the
U.S. [casting] industry.” Dennis Dotson, Dotson Iron Castings
Troughout the 115th Metalcasting
Congress, various other metalcasting industry members were recognized for their leadership and research.
Hoyt Lecture: Aspire to Next Generation Manufacturing
In addition to being announced as the 2nd Vice President, Dotson delivered the honorary Hoyt Lecture on April 8. In the lecture, “Empower, Engage and Align—Te Core of Next Generation Manufacturing,” Dotson urged fellow metalcasters to engage and empower their employees in prepa- ration for a resurgence of manufactur- ing in America. “My 40 years of experience con- vinces me that the next 10 years will be some of the best for manufacturing, specifically for the U.S. [casting] industry.” Dotson said. Dotson has been a member of AFS since 1972, served as a Cast Metals Institute Director from 1997-2001, and an AFS Director Class of 2009. He is a past presi- dent of the Ductile Iron Society and is currently on the boards of Enterprise Minnesota and the National Advisory Board for the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership.
Molding Methods &
Materials Anniversary Paper Vic LaFay, S&B Industrial Min-
erals NA Inc., Cincinnati, delivered the Molding Methods & Materials Silver Anniversary Paper, “Success-
John Campbell gave a presentation on aluminum alloys dur- ing the 115th
Metalcasting Congress.
fully Bonded Bentonite Sands: What Have We Learned in the Last 25 Years” (11-001), which was presented during this year’s congress. Te presentation examined labora-
tory and in-process testing to deter- mine whether prepared green sand meets a metalcaster’s requirements.
Cast Iron Honorary Lecture Stefanescu delivered this year’s
Cast Iron Honorary Lecture, “Cool- ing Curve Analysis—A Mature Melt Quality Control Technique” (11-128). The lecture reviewed the prin-
ciples, interpretation and analysis of thermal or cooling curve analysis and differential thermal analysis.
Dennis Dotson, Dotson Iron Castings, delivered the honorary Hoyt Lecture.
Loukus Wins Applied Research Award
AFS recognized the efforts of Adam
Loukus, REL Inc., Calumet, Mich., for the AFS research project “Heat Treat Parameters to Optimize Mechanical Properties of Pressure Infiltrated Cast Aluminum Based Metal Matrix Com- posites” with its Applied Research Award. Te project was sponsored by the AFS Aluminum Div. 2.
Taylor Award Honors Best Paper Authors
The Howard F. Taylor Award
is presented to the technical paper with the longest last- ing impact on the metalcasting industry. This year, the award was given to Jerry Thiel, Univ. of Northern Iowa, Larry Stahl, General Motors Corp., Detroit, and Shelly Dutler, Magma Foundry Technologies, Scha- umburg, for the paper “High Temperature Physical Properties of Chemically Bonded Sands Provide Insight Into Core Dis- tortion and Provides New Data for Casting Process Simulation” (09-067).
