The Velodrome project has run remarkably smoothly

Velodrome on time and to budget we have completed our first Olympic Park venue and our biggest milestone to date. The striking architecture of the Velodrome and the medal prospects of our cyclists mean the venue will become one of the defining images from London 2012 and a landmark new building for future generations to enjoy. The architect, engineers and contractors have worked together to produce a stunning and sustainable building – it is a worthy venue to be first past the Olympic Park finishing line and a testament to the hard work of those on-site.’


Grand design Located towards the north-eastern end of the Olympic Park, the Velodrome is the centrepiece of a permanent VeloPark. The design was selected in 2007 via a competition run by the ODA, and the judging panel included Sir Chris Hoy, Tate Gallery director Sir Nicholas Serota, and Sunand Prasad, then president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The design they settled on was by Mike Taylor of Hopkins


Architects. Taylor comments: ‘The concept for the venue was to evoke the geometry of the cycling track in the form of the building, which after much refinement resulted in the double-curved roof form. We also wanted to match the efficiency of a bicycle in the design and construction, albeit at a completely different scale.’ The design put great emphasis on reducing the weight


and therefore the amount of materials used. In the case of construction, the weight savings don’t increase speed but do reduce its carbon footprint. This represented a clear collaboration between the architectural concept and the engineering solution, by using a lightweight cable-net roof

structure to form the distinct, eye-catching shape. The Velodrome has a gross internal floor area of 21,700m2

The building’s concrete lower tier has 3,500 seats located around the track, and a further 2,500 seats are suspended in two upper tiers within the two curves of the venue’s roof. In between the lower concrete tiers and upper tiers there is a glass wall, giving spectators a 360° view across the Olympic Park and allowing people outside the venue to see the sporting action taking place inside.


Team work ISG was the Tier 1 contractor on the Velodrome project and invited Imtech G&H to tender for the mechanical and electrical contract. Having worked on another iconic London venue – the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club – Imtech G&H was able to offer a wealth of knowledge and experience. Colin Brunton worked as project manager at the Emirates Stadium and, as a director of Imtech G&H, was closely involved with the company’s activities at the Velodrome. He explains: ‘We have worked with ISG on many other projects, and they were confident in our ability to provide measurable added-value by offering high value technical solutions. Imtech is one of the few M&E contracting firms with experience of projects of this magnitude.’ Imtech G&H began work in November 2008, after being


asked by ISG to be part of its team to review the Stage C document for the scheme and its contractor’s proposal. Brunton adds: ‘Following this, we were involved in every stage of the project development, commenting on designs and cost plans as well as programme and construction issues throughout Stage D and Stage E.’
