This is a time of uncertainty for the water industry, with many areas of policy still undecided. A review of the regulators Ofwat and the Consumer Council for Water will probably be complete by May, but two major areas of policy are still to be announced. The industry is awaiting the Water White Paper, building on the Cave and Walker reviews, and Defra’s Natural Environment White Paper, both of which will set the agenda on issues such as tariffs, metering, flood defence and catchment management for decades to come. Water companies and the supply chain are struggling to move forward with private sewer transfer, which has a start date of 1 October. No one yet knows how the practicalities will be applied and again major areas of policy are yet to be decided. Meanwhile the Carbon Reduction Commitment and push for energy efficiencies across all sectors continue to frame major decisions on capital and operational expenditure. And water companies are also pushing to get closer to their customers to cultivate behaviour change and conservation

together, network, share knowledge and identify new technological approaches and ways of delivering service should be taken up. At IWEX,
alongside a busy exhibition, delegates taking in the seminars will have the opportunity to hear about advances in smart water networks, flood management, industrial water treatment, sewer FOG management and many other areas (see page 11).
IWEX is again a hub for innovation with numerous opportunities to find out about the technologies and ideas both on the market and bubbling under. Delegates will find the latest developments not only in the exhibition and seminars, but in two dedicated events. The University Challenge for researchers returns (see page 13) and a new event, Clean Tech Crucible for technologies (see page 16) will be launched on the main stage of the umbrella event, Sustainabilitylive! Delegates needing a distraction from the tougher issues might relish the sporting atmosphere of the Institute of Water’s Drilling & Tapping Championship. All in all IWEX 2011 is an event that no one in the industry can afford to miss. We look forward to meeting you there.
