shearwater, and will go on to peer into the private lives of other seagoing creatures. The Marine Quarterly will not fi ght shy of controversy. We will be telling the diffi cult and at times surreal story of the restoration of the Cutty Sark. And we will be publishing expert articles, thought- provoking for yachtsmen and Admirals alike, on the control of piracy and the future shape of the Navy. The MQ will devote a lot of space to books. There will be discussion of topics raised in current books, with articles written by their authors – in the fi rst issue, for instance, Tristan Gooley, author of The Natural Navigator, gives an account of Polynesian navigation by swell pattern and star compass. We will also pay a lot of attention to cruising classics, with extracts from forgotten cruising works introduced by affectionate essays from experts. We will also publish many stories that do not fi t into categories. What will be important is that they should be instructive, hilarious or a rattling good read. There will be short fi ction from well-known nautical writers, despatches from oiltown Aberdeen and the last steam puffer on the West Coast of Scotland. Anything fi t to read about marine life will be there.

During the development of the Marine Quarterly there has been much debate as to what a sea journal should look like. Some have said that it is vital to include photographs. There are however plenty of magazines that print beautiful photographs. We subscribe to the idea that for dedicated readers, words make the best pictures – though the cover will bear paintings by top-notch marine artists living and dead, and the pages will be illuminated with woodcuts, line drawings and Micronesian stick charts where applicable.

Journal In short, the Marine Quarterly is a journal aimed squarely at seafarers who like to read. The test of its success will be this: you may be thumbing through it in the cockpit of a boat in a marina, or on the top of a bus, or in the dentist’s waiting room. But wherever you may be, in your mind you will be on the sea - real, savage, grim, deep, strange, funny, dangerous, exciting, beautiful. If this is how the MQ makes you feel we will have done our job. The Marine Quarterly will be published four times a year, starting on 1 March 2011. It is available by subscription only.
