Simone family of Naples and to the Maltese Nicholas Cammillieri and, latterly, to Luigi Maria Galea. These, and many other lesser-known artists, carried out works rooted fi rmly in the Roux tradition. The 1840s and 1850s witnessed the peak of demand and infl uence. As the industrial revolution advanced, traditional craft began to disappear. The increasing effi ciency of the steamship meant that the naval sailing vessel became virtually extinct and the wooden hull obsolete. The fi nal upheaval came with the start of the American Civil War and with an inevitable, adverse, effect on seaborne trade. As clippers came to dominate parts of transoceanic trade, which gave rise to a new school of marine artists, the Roux family traditions faded away. However, for any who wished to glimpse, and have insight into, the trading traditions of the Mediterranean, its busy harbours and ports, the Roux family will supply the keys. CY


Julia Korner, LSIAD, has been a painting specialist for over 30 years. She worked at Christies for nearly 20 years where she set up the Maritime Department in 1987. In January, 2001 Julia was approached to curate a major exhibition entitled ‘Yachting and the America’s Cup’ to mark the 150th


anniversary. Trained


originally as an art historian and conservator she runs a busy conservation studio in West London, specialising in oil paintings, frames and polychrome sculpture; she continues to represent museums and private collectors at auction and is a member of LAPADA and The British Antique Dealers’ Association at whose forthcoming March 2011 Fair she will be exhibiting. She lectures for NADFAS, the Sotheby’s Institute and Christie’s Education.
