The boat was built in aluminium, with a carbon fi bre mast, and it is because of the diversity of materials now available to build these boats that the class association has had to be particularly clever in creating their latest rules, so that the performance of all the boats, old and new, is as close as possible.
Hoek Design, in the Netherlands, have become the leaders in interpreting the original lines dating back to the 1930s, and adapting them for modern materials and interiors and regulations. Lionheart, launched in 2010, is the most recent J-class to join the growing fl eet, her hull was constructed in aluminium by Freddie Bloemsma in Holland, before going to Claasen Jachtbouw for fi nishing. The original design of Lionheart dates back to the Ranger campaign for the America’s Cup in 1937, when owner Mike Vanderbilt commissioned a number of designs, before choosing what would become Ranger as the one he would build.
